Gisborne Gets a New High School

Although the contractors are still on the job, and years of work will be required before all facilities are completed, enough buildings were ready for the new Lytton High School, in upper Mangapapa, to make a start at the beginning of the school year.

One hundred and sixty pupils attended on the first day, when they heard addresses from the Principal, Mr J. E. C. Wilson, and the chairman of the Gisborne High Schools Board of Governors, Mr L. T. Burnard.

Later in the day Mr Wilson conducted the pupils round the extensive grounds while he pointed out the improvements still to be made to what, only a year ago, was just another rural paddock.

The school started with seven classrooms available. A further four should be completed in a month. The foundations are being laid for the administration block, which will include the assembly hall.
