Beauty Contest

Some good-looking Gisborne girls paraded before the judges at the "Miss Gisborne" contest held at Waikanae Beach during the holidays. The line-up is seen above, waiting for the verdict.

The title was won by Joan Presland, a tall, blonde young lady who used to be prominent on the athletic field. Second prize was awarded Robyn Strachan, who is well known in dancing and amateur dramatic circles, while the third prize went to Margaret Pollard, winner of last summer's "Photo News" outdoor girl contest. Joan was promptly whisked off to Tauranga to compete against the country's top beauties for the New Zealand title. Here she is leaving on the plane. Behind her are, in order, Miss Hawkes Bay, Miss Wellington, Miss Canterbury (the winner), Miss Caroline Bay (Timaru), and Miss Tahunanui Beach (Nelson).

Compere for the beach concert series was Mr George Tollerton, seen here with Judith Oates.

Gisborne was fortunately free of serious traffic accidents during the holidays, although there were a number of minor accidents. This car piled into the ditch in Cochrane Street, and had to be dug out.

Officials of the Gisborne Yacht Club are concerned at damage being done to boats and other equipment. Recently, several sails were deliberately mutilated by vandals, and this is how the back end of a dinghy was left after a car had been backed into it.
