Bernie Up the Pole
Highest man in Gisborne one day recently was Bernie Thomson, of the P. & T. Department. Bernie wasn't just up Kaiti Hill....he was up a 70ft pole on top of Kaiti Hill.
Purpose of his high climb was to instal a new aerial for the ultra-shortwave system by which police, fire brigade, and taximen maintain their radio communication system.
The 70ft pole is a whopper. Note standard pole at right.
The ground party. From right, John Gray (radio technical officer) and Peter Chadwick, both of Wellington; Malcolm Williams and John Gardner, both of Gisborne.
Hauling up aerial was ticklish job.
The system in use: a Gisborne taxidriver, Sam Chiles, talks from his cab to the taxi office.
