The dedication of the "Wayside Cross" at Holy Trinity Church, November 11, 1920. Note ivy-covered church, before roof was lowered following the big earthquake. In right-hand picture, bell-tower on school, and wooden buildings fronting Derby Street, have long since disappeared.

Yes, it was a big day in Gisborne when World War I ended, as indeed it was in every city, town, and hamlet throughout New Zealand and the Empire. The great struggle was over and rejoicing broke out throughout the land. These pictures, made available by Mr Vic Ivess, Aberdeen Road, from a private collection, show the gay scenes in Gladstone Road on November 13, 1918, as four long years of war ended. In perfect weather, decorated cars of all kinds paraded through the streets (above), and everybody had a flag to wave. The flag of a World War I ally who was a World War II enemy can be seen at left of the right-hand picture.
