Jack Maybury in Gisborne

Durable Jack Maybury, with his pretty wife Dorothy Jean and his Colgate-Palmolive stage and radio show, came to Gisborne recently and packed the Opera House with patrons, whose admission money, to the tune of £200, will go to the combined Surf Life-Saving Clubs of Gisborne.

Pictures taken during the first half of the programme show some of those who matched wits with the irrepressible Jack.

Nobody won any spectacular prizes, and Bert Emms was a bit lucky to get away with a rolled-gold watch for his wife. Beverley Davy excited most interest with her knowledgable answers on swimming questions, but at the 3200 question, "Who first swam the English Channel, in what year, and how long did it take?", had the name right (Webb), but not the year (1875) or the time (21hr 45min).
