Mayor Was "In the Kart"

The race of the year was held earlier this month at what used to be the rubbish dump in Awapuni Road, when the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, some of the City Councillors, and the Town Clerk, and Assistant Town Clerk were to be seen burning up the cinders on the newly-formed Gisborne Go-Kart Club's racetrack.

They were giving the club's new track their blessing by competing in an invitation event to mark the opening meeting of the club.

Mayor Harry had the idea that his opponents might let him win out of respect for his office as leading citizen, but he couldn't hold off the challenge of the Assistant Town Clerk, Fred Stenner, or Councillor Martin Lynch, and the Mayoral Go-Kart came in third.

A full programme of two days' racing marked the inauguration of the Go-kart Club's new track, with about 50 vehicles competing. This picture shows the "all-in" start of the first race.
