Topsy-Turvy. Most unusual happening of the month was the series of tidal surges which struck Gisborne following the earthquakes in Chile. For more than 24 hours, the tides were topsy-turvy, rising higher and falling lower than ever before, in cycles of only half-an-hour or so. This picture, by Eastland Photographers, shows the "Ski-Lane" notice from the Turanganui River, which finished up on the beach outside the pavilion.

Rugby Stalwarts. Gisborne's interest in the present All Black tour of South Africa is centred on Mark Irwin (right), son of Mr and Mrs W. L. Irwin, Iranui Road. Mark is pictured here with Dr. J. W. McKay, Gisborne doctor who was a member of the 1950 Lions team which toured New Zealand.
