Canoe Champs

The first New Zealand Canoe Championships to be held in Gisborne met with fine weather at Easter, and were voted a pronounced success.

Far ahead of all other rivals, T. Dooney, Palmerston North (the New Zealand champion), left, puts his head down as he tries to catch B. L. Harper (Australian champion), at right. Harper gasps for breath as he struggles to hold his lead.

Over the finish line, Harper lies back exhausted. He won by a second.
