"The Oldest Sports Meeting in the Bay"

Waerenga-o-Kuri is a tight-knit little community perched on the hilly perimeter of the Gisborne plains, with a distinction of character which comes, perhaps, from so frequently looking down the slopes of Gentle Annie on to the rest of the visible world. They seem to be a carefree lot up there, and when they run a sports meeting they manage to combine good management with a happy time for all who attend. May be it's the altitude.

At any rate, the sports meeting held last month at the Laurels was a gala occasion--the Golden Jubilee Meeting of the club. The weather was warm but overcast, and pleasant enough for the large crowd which attended. By the look of it, this included nearly everybody in Waerenga-o-Kuri, and many hundreds of visitors. Yes, it was a gay day on the Clearing of Kuri.
