Viaduct Dismantled

Biggest nail in the coffin of the Moutohora railway was driven this month with the dismantling of the Otoko viaduct.

Three hundred and seventy feet long, and towering 100 feet above the Waihuka Stream, the big viaduct was one of the showpieces of the line when it was built in 1912.

In the matter of an hour or two the Railways Department's specially - built girder - lifting crane lifted out and carried away big steel sections from the township end of the bridge, and the steel link across the deep ravine was broken forever.

Atop 60ft-concrete tower, two workmen salvage steel plates, while, beyond them, others begin lifting track on bridge in preparation for removal of further girders.
