This is not an evacuation from Dunkirk, but a scene at the annual picnic day at Makarori Beach, when residents' boats are pressed into service to give the kiddies a ride.

And this is Ian Rogers, who won the annual Makarori speedboat contest.

Ever wondered what that post is out on the Kaiti rocks? Most people connect it with the loss of the "Star of Canada" in 1912, and this is quite correct. It was set in concrete then to anchor the wreck, and has survived the weather and waves ever since.

This is all that was left of Ian O'Brien's A.35 car after it hit a post and somersaulted into a ditch near Waihirere last month. Mr O'Brien, who comes from Palmerston North, was travelling from Rotorua to Gisborne at the time. He and his passenger, Miss Maureen Sheely, Taumarunui, were discharged from Cook Hospital after a short stay.
