Wairoa competitors were prominent at the annual East Coast rifle championships held on the Sponge Bay range. The premier trophy, the Rait Belt, was again won by the Wairoa marksman, Stan Clark, who has his eye this year on big things.

The "Pop" Jeune Mug, a valued trophy. Had its origin 20 years ago at a Gisborne-Wairoa contest when the Wairoa constable and the late C. Stoneham started arguing about who was the best shot. To settle the argument they seized Mr Jeune's mug, put it on a post 150yds away, and started shooting.
