Roving Camera

There was high excitement at Pouawa Beach one Sunday earlier in the month, when fire broke out on the camping flats at the south end of the bay. Several caravans and tents were hastily removed. In due course the Fire Brigade arrived and doused what was left of the blaze.

Riley Wood, who is forever digging up the streets or putting them back together again, imported this crafty bit of machinery. It is an earth-rammer. it jumps up and down by itself, like a Jumping Jack, is guided here by Melvyn Wooster.

Shane Townsley (left), who has a genuine fondness for birds and animals, saved this seagull as a small chick, reared it until it was ready to fly. Here Michael Ivess holds the bird as it tries its wings at Makarori.
