The Gisborne Photo News

A New Year

Well, here's another New Year upon us, and that gives us the opportunity to extend to all our readers and well-wishers our sincere hope that the months ahead bring them health and prosperity.

It bears emphasising that with "Photo News' our readers are our only consideration. For instance, we carry no advertising. This not only makes us a rarity in the publishing world. It also frees us from some obligations which newspaper men often find irksome.

Back in the hellfire and brimstone days of pioneer journalism, such freedom would have been highly prized by crusading editors. It would still be most acceptable to editors who cultivate a deep respect for their great responsibilities to their communities and to the traditions of the Press.

It is not the duty or the responsibility of a magazine like "Photo News" to do more (as we said in our first issue) than "interest and entertain our readers with news of Gisborne in words and pictures".

We are not here to espouse causes, except to espouse in a very general way, where we can, the well-being of the district. We are here simply to provide our readers with a regular budget of pictures illustrating the life and times of Gisborne and the East Coast, which, after perusal, can be filed away, or conveniently posted to interested people elsewhere.

This service is OUR job, and we will go on doing it as in the past, with nothing in mind but the wants of our readers--without fear or favour, without class or race consciousness, and without political bias. It has so won the loyal and continuing support of residents that in November and December we sold more copies of "Gisborne Photo News" than in any previous two-month period since the magazine started.

Thank You, Readers!
