Big Dutch Ship

The biggest ship to come right into the bay for a long time was the Dutch liner, the 20,000 - ton Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, which paid Gisborne a courtesy visit on August 8.

It was anticipated that the liner would make a "coastal sweep," and that the best viewpoint would be from Wainui Beach. However, the captain favoured the city with a close-up view by cruising right into the bay.

Pictures here were taken from the Richard and John, which went out into the bay to meet the big ship.

On shore, thousands of people watched the ship during her visit.
