Cycle Racing
The miles fly past quickly for members of the Gisbome Amateur Cycling Club—one every 2½ minutes for the faster riders—when they get together on a Saturday afternoon for their chosen sport. The club is small, but competition is keen, and there are some very promising young cyclists in both senior and junior divisions.
These pictures were taken on the occasion of a race to Muriwai and back, earlier this month.
The winner, Bruce Ball, off 4min, rode the distance in 68min 32sec. Neil Robiason took fastest time with 67min 37sec. Pictures on this page show senior riders as they left the starting line.

In the colts' race, Ian Cameron had his first win. The race was 15 miles, and Ian completed the distance in 44min 24sec.
Next home were Kevin Muir (who also won fastest time, 41min 14sec), followed by Bernard Vette, Geoff Hutchins and Ian Robb. (Note how completely Robb is obscured by Vette in this picture, but his shadow is there on the road).
Three of the club officials, Messrs K. Pethrick, D. Wallace (handicapper) and C. Pollard, (president).
Gisborne was lashed by a 48-knot southerly on July 6, when some damage was done to the citrus crops, glasshouses, fences, and power and telephone lines. The gale was accompanied by exceptionally heavy rain, which was virtually horizontal when this picture was taken into the teeth of the gale at the breakwater.
