The Gisborne Photo News

2

Five Years Old

With this issue, "Gisborne Photo News" marks its fifth anniversary. The first issue of the magazine was published on June 3, 1954. In the 60 issues which have been published over the five years since that date, an estimated 100,000 pictures have been printed which have served to illustrate the life and times of this district.

When "Photo News" started it was not given much chance of success by experts, amateur or professional. But with the loyal support of an ever-increasing number of readers, aided perhaps by our own stubborn persistence, the magazine was established on a sound footing. It was first printed on what must surely be the smallest lithographic printing press ever made, and the copies were trimmed on a guillotine erected in a tent.

Today "Photo News" is printed in our modern plant in Aberdeen Road, which also handles the production of "New Plymouth Photo News" and "Wanganui Photo News".

As pioneers of the community picture-magazine business, we feel justified on this occasion in expressing our pride in the happy outcome of our enterprise. To the best of our knowledge this type of magazine is still restricted entirely to New Zealand.

Our Cover shows a group of children at the Central School infant department, all of whom were born about the same time as "Gisborne Photo News".
