Progress on the Bridge

Prospects at the Roebuck Road bridge took a heartening leap this month. With the piers completed, the stage was set for linking the two banks with the big steel girders which are to carry the bridge decking.

The girders were inched out over the stream with an ingenious combination of ropes and pulleys. To the amateur eye, the operation promised to be a hazardous one, but the experienced contractors made it all look very safe and simple.
