A 30-year-old French-Canadian, Conrad Dube, who visited Gisborne recently. Stricken with polio as a child, he was told cycling would be good for his health, has since cycled 130,000 miles, worn out seven machines in his travels around the world.

No better 'ole than this one has been seen around Gisborne for quite a while. Apparently the decrepit state of protective sheathing at the Esplanade end of the William Pettie bridge allowed erosion to eat a big hole under the bitumin of the roadway where it runs on to the bridge. All of a sudden the bitumin, supported by nothing but space, collapsed. In picture at left, looking down into hole, and below, City Council workmen place new sheathing preparatory to filling the gaping cavity.
