Building continues apace in Gisborne. In addition to the big housing project in the Fitzgerald Block at Kaiti, which includes the Parade of Homes, a number of State houses are being built elsewhere, including this block at Elgin, which is reached by way of Childers Road or Lytton Road.

One of the first steps in the construction of two-storey multiple units is to build concrete dividing walls like this one. They are buttressed by temporary supports until the house is built round them.

This picture by Trevor White, Waingake, shows Mrs N. Johnson at work in a valley shearing shed, with her baby on her back. When this picture was taken, Mrs Johnson was the cook with Wallace Smith's shearing gang, but when she wasn't cooking, she could shear at the rate of 100 a day, baby or no baby.
