One of the earliest photographs of Gisborne is this one taken probably in the late 1860's, It shows old Maori huts on the Kaiti Pa site, with the stockade in the background, and sodded walls forming part of the defences of the stockade.

Gisborne in this picture (about 1895) has a breakwater in course of construction, and the groyne finished. The Kaiti bank of the Turanganui is still a mudflat, however, and continued so until about 35 years ago. (Pictures from Mr Denys W. W. Williams, Ruangarehu Station, Tokomaru Bay.)
