Big Shift Through Main Street

Once the residence of Mr E. P. Joyce, a Gisborne businessman who was prominent in local affairs up to about 1910, and later the property of the late A. H. Wall, the house was purchased by Mr N. Cox for removal to a site in Wainui Road.

Shoppers in Gladstone Road were surprised to see a new building appear suddenly in the heart of the city on a busy morning last month. It was a 10-roomed house, but it hadn't come to stay. It was just passing through.

Building had only a foot or two to spare while crossing Peel Street bridge.

Even in wide Peel Street itself, space was at a premium.

Turning into Gladstone Road was no problem for the skilled haulage contractors. Building measured 57ft by 35ft.
