Winter Sports Again

The winter sports season opened on Saturday, April 11, on a day more suited for the beach than the sports field. Some players, like the one in the hockey picture above (in the match Old Boys v Caledonian) stripped to the waist, and some on the sidelines took the opportunity to gain a little late-season tan.

The next Saturday was cooler. Highlight of the soccer that day was a junior match between High School and Eastern Union. In the picture at left, School's goalie John Bonica makes a spectacular save.

Basketball has a different look this season. All players in New Zealand have adopted international rules, which call for seven players in a team instead of nine. And each girl wears letters indicating her place in the teams GS for goal shooter, GA for goal attack, WA for wing attack, C for centre, WD for wing defence, GD for goal defence, and GK for goalkeeper.

The second Saturday game at Rugby Park, Marist v. H.S.O.B., produced plenty of exciting moments for the full stand of spectators. The teams strung out across the field as Marist goes into the attack.

Best try of the day was scored by Brian Johnson who outwitted several HSOB defence players to touch down under the posts.
