Pictures from the Past

By courtesy of Mr D. W. W. Williams, chairman of the Kaiapu County Council, we are enabled to reproduce these very fine pictures of early Gisborne, taken in the 1870's or 1880's. It is assumed that they are taken from the tower of the brewery, then situated at the river end or Lowe Street.

Towards Kaiti Hill, showing the river arid Captain Read's establishment. Gladstone Road is nearest street shown, with Graham's Drapery (right of centre) where Pettie's now stands, and Reads Quay beyond.

Swinging to the right, the camera has caught view of two sailing ships in the bay. Wilson's Argyll Hotel is right of centre, on Gladstone Road, and next to it, at right of picture, is the Herald Office (established 1874).

Further round, the camera looks across Lowe Street to Gladstone Road, with Waikanae Creek in the background. At left is the Masonic Hotel, and at right a furniture warehouse, possibly on Humphrey's present site.

Assuming again that all four pictures were taken from the brewery tower, the street in left foreground would be Lowe Street, turning into Read's Quay, In that case, the bridge being put up across the Taruheru would be the first peel Street bridge, and if that is so, the four pictures on these pages may belong to the year 1882, when the first Peel Street bridge was opened.
