A Day on a Fishing Trawler

The importance of the fishing industry to Gisborne is indicated by the number of trawlers tied up in harbour any time the weather is too rough for fishing. When the weather is right, most of the boats are gone long before first light, heading out into the seas off the East Coast to reap the rich ocean harvest.

These pictures were taken during a recent one-day trip of the "Richard and John", the boat Snowy Higham sailed all the way from England to Gisborne a few years ago. She was the first boat out of England to make landfall at Gisborne since Captain Cook's Endeavour nearly 200 years ago.
