Looking down Lowe Street on a hot morning in 1902, the camera recorded this scene, in which the Mayor, Mr John Townley, (near lamppost at left) is seen reading the Peace Day proclamation marking the end of the Boer War. Veterans of the war are drawn up inffront of Mr Townley. Note the umbrellas used to keep off the heat. At left is the old Masonic Hotel.

No doubt demonstrating the fruits of common endeavour, these members of the Mutual Improvement Society are seen enjoying their annual picnic at Cameron's Bush, Bushmere Road, in 1897. Straw hats were the rage, and light-coloured clothing has largely replaced the dark clothes which were so fashionable with the earlier generation.
