At a function at Macrae Baths recently opportunity was taken to present to Mr Vic Dooling the N.Z. Swimming Association's long service award blazer. Picture at left shows Mr Dooling accepting the blazer from the Gisborne Swimming Club president. Mr Dave Miller. Standing next to Mr Dooling is Mr E.T. Chrisp, who was presented with the club's life membership badge. Included in the picture is the dub secretary, Mrs Wauchop.

On the same occasion, a plaque commemorating members of the club who fell in World War II was unveiled by the Mayor, Mr Barker.

Tragedy struck at Waikanae Beach during early January when a seven-year-old boy, Percy Haerewa, also known as Percy Collier, who lived with his mother, Mrs T. Collier, and Mr Collier, at the Kaiti Pa, was swept away by the current while playing in the shallow water at the edge of the "cut" at the beach.
Two immediate attempts at rescue were made by Mrs Wi Repa, of Ranfurly Road, who saw the boy disappear, and by Peter Takako, of Kahutia Street, but the boy disappeared in the murky water. Peter had to be taken to the hospital suffering from exhaustion and shock.
Picture shows holiday-makers watching as launch drags channel. The body was recovered some days later in the river channel.
