Ninety Not Out

A notable milestone for a particularly well-known Gisborne identity was reached late last year when Mr J. J. ("Joe") Martin, for over 50 years the licensee of the Royal Hotel, celebrated his 90th birthday.

"Joe" Martin was born in County Roscommon in Ireland and came to N. Z. about 1890.

A keen sportsman, he was a good Rugby player in his youth, a winner of the N.Z. pairs bowling championship and Auckland pairs championship, and all the main local bowling titles. He held a lifelong interest in all types of sport, an interest which was carried on by his sons, and any worthwhile sporting venture received his support and benefited from his generosity.

His feat of holding the Royal Hotel licence for over 50 years is generally regarded as something of a record. The family association with the hotel is being carried on by sons Harry and Frank.
