Waitangi Falls

Little known, mainly because of their inaccessibility, the Waitangi Falls, on the Ruakituri River, are a spectacular scenic attraction.

This was made apparent to the Gisborne Canoe and Tramping Club, when they visited the falls over Labour weekend.

Slabs of rock the size of small houses twist and distort the flow as the river plunges 180 feet.

At the top and bottom, the fall extends across the full width of the valley. Half way down, the whole flow is confined in a narrow, U-shaped defile. (Photographs by David Calder)

The falls as seen from below the bottom terrace. They are 180 feet from top to bottom, & drop in a series of cascades over a considerable length of the river. It is not possible to view the falls as a whole.
