Educating the Pedestrian

For years the motorist has always blamed the lackadaisical pedestrian - the pedestrian has in turn cursed the bloodthirsty, careless motorist. Who is really to blame? "Both", says the Transport Department.

Traffic officers are now turning special attention on the pedestrian and his wayward techniques, particularly in crossing main roads.

One of the commonest faults: setting out from the footpath at an angle to the crossing.

Crossing a main intersection diagonally is blatantly courting disaster.

With the pedestrian crossing only a few yards from him this pedestrian is committing an obvious breach. The law states that a pedestrian must use the marked crossing if he is within 60 feet of it. From the point of view of personal safety, it is advisable to use a crossing at all times.

An all too common and most dangerous fault is that of a mid-street gossip, oblivious of oncoming traffic.
