Veteran Traveller Looks Back

His travelling goes back to the days when his coast itinerary from Opotiki to Gisborne by horseback and ship took a fortnight. Now it's one day.

In the picture, taken outside the then Masonic Hotel, they are: Mr Chainey, an hotel night porter, known only as 'Desert Gold', Mr Bock, (unknown), George Anderson, Mr Searle, (unknown), Messrs Hill, Walters, Smith, Blewitt and Clarkson.

Pictures, from Smithy's own collection, should be of particular interest to older Gisborne and coast residents. They date back to 1916 and feature the travellers who were, at that time, among Gisborne's few contacts with the outside world.

As a commercial traveller, Mr L. R. (Smithy) Smith, Auckland has covered this territory for some 45 years.
