Te Arai's New Bridge

No taniwhas, gremlins, leprechauns, or other mystic creatures which might have plans on the new bridge across the Te Aral River at Manutuke have yet made their appearance, and the contractors, the Rope Construction Company, are making excellent progress. Maori Legend has it that the previous bridge was built on a tapu site, which was the reason why it collapsed.

Built downstream from the old bridge, the new structure of steel and reinforced concrete looks as though it should last forever, taniwhas or no taniwhas. The last pile has been driven, and some of the steel girders are in position. The new road will bypass the present Manutuke township.

Massive girders will support modern highway traffic.
