"But there's no Lake Waimata that I've ever heard of," you might say. Neither there was until a landslide completely blocked the upper Waimata River, near Mr R. A. White's Waimiro Station.
Before a channel had been gouged by neighbouring farmers and Catchment Board workers, the river had backed up to some 25 feet above normal.
