The scene at a firemen's rally in 1889. At this stage in the brigade's history, water was drawn from the Taruheru River by a huge steam pump, housed in building at left, and pumped through underground pipelines around the central area of the town. Pump station was situated on the present site of the St. John Ambulance and Guide Halls.
