At War With The Rapids

These spectacular pictures show Auckland Canoe and Tramping Club members fighting their way through the Kopuriki Rapids, on the Rangitaiki River, the mouth of which meets the sea near Whakatane. The battle against such odds was a rather uneven one, but, believe it or not, they really did come out alive.

Pictures will be of especial interest to members of Gisborne's Canoe and Tramping Club who have a trip down the Rangitaiki River down on their list as a future project. Good luck, chaps; don't forget, it's even harder than it looks in these pictures.
