In the Space Age, Too!

In this age of Sputniks and rockets to the moon, dogs circling in space and maybe even humans before very long, it would seem that the ancient Chinese art of kite flying is right out of place.

A group of Gisborne boys recently proved however, that kites have just as much fascination today as ever.

Pictured on this page are members of The Life Boys preparing, building and decorating kites to take part in a kite flying contest held at Wainui beach during the school holidays. This was a refreshing variation from the usual holiday ramble or hike and boys entered into the spirit of the contest with wholehearted gusto.

Although a little gusty, the wind and weather were ideal for the contest at Wainui beach.

"The story of the one that got away": Geoffrey Tune had his kite well aloft when a sudden gust of wind broke the string. The string remaining on the kite trailed in the sea, thus creating sufficient drag to keep kite aloft. When last seen, Geoffrey's kite was heading for South America with - his name and address attached
