£100 or Bust!
Never before had the Opera House witnessed such a battle of wits. Mrs Annette Ellis, McDonald St. had set her mind on walking off with £100 for her "bag" question, stolidly settled in for the "Battle of the Bargain"
"£30 - the bag - £80 the bag - £100 - the Money!"
With the battle over the hard line on Mrs Ellis face softened to a warm smile of victory as she proudly held the two £50 notes, the prize of battle.

By quickly answering "Malaria" to a question regarding an ancient disease not communicated between humans, but through an intermediary, Sandra Jones, Chalmers Rd, won for herself a 6.2 cubic foot refrigerator; later swapped same for a sewing machine for herself, an ironing table for mum, and an electric shaver for dad.
Mrs Alma McMillan, Mangakino, a New Zealand competitor in this year's "Round Australia" car trial, came to Gisborne to try her luck at earning her trip to Australia, but unluckily missed out.
Another refrigerator winner was Mrs Smith, Ann St, who won a six cubic foot home freezer, which she is seen here receiving from Mr Brian Corbett of Gisborne Fridgsupply.
