Port Visitors

A new coastal vessel and, possibly a regular visitor in the future, paid its first call to Gisborne last month.

Owned by Wilson's Portland Cement Co., the ship will be carrying cement from Portland to Gisborne and Tauranga when required and, will also supplement the service from Portland to Auckland at present conducted by the Herekino.

Named "Nathaniel Wilson" after founder of the company, the vessel was built in Holland and among the eleven man crew who sailed her to New Zealand, were seven Dutch immigrants.

No strangers to the port, the two survey launches Tarapunga and Takapu, regular visitors to this port when their mother ship H.M.N.Z.S. Lachlan was engaged on survey work on this coast, made a brief overnight stop here, on their way from Wellington to Tauranga and Auckland.
