Gisborne High School Jubilee

The jubilee celebrations of the Gisborne High School, to take place during the first weekend in March of next year, should draw back to their home town former pupils from all parts of the Dominion. Energetic committees of the Old Students' Association are at work preparing for the occasion, and no effort is being spared to make the celebrations an outstanding success. The chairman of the jubilee committee is Mr T. R. Fraser, and the secretary is Mr F. H. Bull.

The president of the Association, Mr W. C. Kohn, is chairman of a memorial project committee, with Mr G. Smith as secretary. This committee proposes to build the modern memorial pavilion shown below, to commemorate those ex-pupils who fell in World War II. It will be built on the playing fields opposite the school, near the Rectory, and its opening is to be one of the central features of the jubilee celebrations.

The original school, set on a bare paddock, has something of the appearance (above) of a prison building, has mellowed with the years (below) and the addition of trees and gardens. Additions to the original building have been made from time to time. Brick copings, bell tower, and ventilators have been removed, and the slate roof was replaced recently with a more efficient one of galvanised iron. The fir and gum trees showing behind the old school have long since disappeared.

Mr J. Leggatt, a former rector of the school, now headmaster of the Christchurch Boys' High School, will be the guest of honour at the jubilee celebrations. Mr Leggatt received the C.B.E. in this year's birthday honours.

The first public function in connection with the jubilee took place this month at the Regent Theatre when, by courtesy of Kerridge-Odeon Theatres, a gala premiere screening of the British film, "Carve Her Name With Pride" was held in aid of the building fund.
