Mrs T. Smellie turning the first sod at a ceremony to mark the commencement of a project to build a new Baptist Church in Te Hapara. The ceremony was held in conjunction with jubilee celebrations of the Gisborne Church. The first Sunday School classes at Te Hapara were held in Mrs Smellie's home.
The site of the new church is in Childers Road near Waverly St.
