Cosmopolitan Club Jubilee

The golden Jubilee of the Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club, celebrating the 50 years which have passed since the club was granted its charter on May 14, 1908, was the occasion for a series of functions to mark the occasion.

The celebrations were held in conjunction with the annual conferences of the Association of N.Z. Workingmen's and Cosmopolitan Clubs, and the N.Z. Association of Chartered Club, so that in addition to many former members who returned to Gisborne for the celebrations, delegates from these two organisations were also present.

The club has existed for longer than 50 years, but records prior to 1930 have been lost.

A festive air pervaded the club premises during one evening of the celebrations when the club's older members were the guests of honour at a social function. Many of those present could remember the occasion of the granting of the club's charter. Pictures above and below are taken during the evening.

To conclude the celebrations, a grand ball was held in the Army Hall on the night of Friday, June 13th. "Black Friday" it might have been, but the general merrymaking disposed of all ill effects — at least until the next morning. These pictures were taken during the singing of Auld Lang Syne at the conclusion of the ball.
