Good Progress with Butler's Wall

Favoured by a long spell of fine weather, the Gisborne Harbour Board gang working on the reconstruction of Butler's wall at the harbour entrance have been making good progress with the project.

Massive concrete piles are being driven on either side of the old wall. The centre of the wall is filled with rubble, and a reinforced concrete top completes the job.

Picture, looking towards harbour entrance, shows the various stages in this work. Note concrete piles in right foreground being stripped down to correct level. Beyond them is reinforcing for capping beam. Tall structure is derrick for driving piles, operated by cable from winch house in middle of completed section.
