New Streets For Old

Pleasure at what he termed "Probably the most successful year in the history of the council" was expressed by the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, in his review of the annual accounts of the City Council.

Mr Barker said that revenue had topped expenditure by a good margin, and in addition the physical results of the Council's year were most impressive.

He paid a special tribute to the policy of diverting maintenance expenditure to permanent work, which had resulted in 23,800 square yards of permanent sealing and 20,000 of re-sealing, plus 3½ miles of kerbing and channelling, and a mile of permanent footpath.

Pictures here show some of the Council's staff on street work, which they are doing at a 20% saving on contract cost.
