Progress in Power

All electric power supplied to Gisborne City was recently stepped up to 112,000 volts. This mightn't mean much to the average consumer, but it does to a number of power users to whom a more constant voltage is important.

For some years now work has been going on steadily or transmission lines which stretch across country on giant steel pylons from Waikaremoana to Gisborne, and at the Valley Road sub-station, where big new transformers and overhead gear have been installed. Besides providing more constant voltage, the change to 112,000 volts cuts down line losses in power transmission.

Pictures were taken at the Valley Road station, nerve centre of the district's power supply.
