Busy Port

Coal, oil, cement, timber, and general merchandise—these are the goods which pour into Gisborne from the ships of the New Zealand coastal fleet.

And they keep coming in everincreasing quantities.

In the six months to March 31, for instance, 32,477 tons were unloaded, or 23% more than in the same period last year.

Outward cargo was 13,485 tons compared with 13,135 tons last year for the same period.

Pictures show a busy Saturday morning at the port. At left, unloading coal and posts. Below, a pile of old tram rails was included in cargo from the Kaiapoi.
