The first picture to come into "Photo News" shoving the freighting wheels in place on the old Roebuck Rd. bridge was made available for publication recently by Mrs A. G. MacDonald, Makaraka. It appears at right, and also shows an early steam tractor which was part of the Gisborne Borough Council equipment.

The old bridge in its last days, with the wheel guides still in place
The weighting wheels, designed to run down the rails and counterbalance a hinged span in the bridge so that ships could pass under, were never used. The ships preferred to let down their funnels.
The wheels fell off in the big earthquake and were never seen again.
