The Hospital Hill Project

Helped by the long run of good weather, the big job of draining that section of Hospital Hill below the nurses' home has been proceeding apace. Just how difficult and far-reaching this project is, only a visit to the site will show. At regular intervals across the trouble-spot, deep trenches are being cut back into the hill. In these trenches, field pipes are being laid. With the field pipes there are layers of shingle, rubble, ashes, etc., to improve the drainage into the pipes.

The work is expected to increase in difficulty with the arrival of the wet spell. Two of the pictures on this page (below and below right) were taken on a day last month following rainfall of just under an inch.

Far left, incisions in hill where pipes will be laid. In centre, beyond dragline, the first main incision. At right, stockpiles of materials for packing round field pipes.
