The Hospital Hill Project
Helped by the long run of good weather, the big job of draining that section of Hospital Hill below the nurses' home has been proceeding apace. Just how difficult and far-reaching this project is, only a visit to the site will show. At regular intervals across the trouble-spot, deep trenches are being cut back into the hill. In these trenches, field pipes are being laid. With the field pipes there are layers of shingle, rubble, ashes, etc., to improve the drainage into the pipes.

Looking down from the Nurses' Home to the work in progress on Hospital Hill. In centre foreground, seepage creeping across slip, even in the dry weather. Far left, incisions in hill where pipes will be laid. In centre, beyond dragline, the first main incision. At right, stockpiles of materials for packing round field pipes.
