2XG on the Air
The People Behind the Voices

In a glass-walled studio up-stairs in a Peel Street building the chimes sound and the smooth voice of an announcer says..... "This is Station 2XG, Gisborne. The time is......"

Through the glass an alert technician in the control room flicks switches, turns dials, spins turntables.....

Out near Wainui Beach, in the transmitter house, valves glow, and from the towering mast nearby the magic voices of the air wing their way into thousands of homes.....

Station 2XG is on the air.

Like many another marvel of a modern age, the daily radio session is accepted in the home without question. These pages in "Photo News" are not to show how the marvel works, but to picture the people who make Radio 2XG tick. Under departmental headings, they are: Management. Administration, Technical, Announcing, Programme, and Copy.

On this page are the announcers – the people behind the voices.

Running a modern radio station is a complex business. Under Station Manager Leo Fowler's supervision, all sections combine to produce the farrago of music, information, features, and advertising matter which make up the programmes. From its vast library of records "Programme" selects well over 100 records each day, and tailors these into a scheduled programme. Copy from the advertising department is written, features, interviews, special sessions, etc. are fitted in, and the result is a complete typewritten schedule for the day.

Working from schedule, Lewis Woodburn controls "the mixture" as it pours into the public ear.
