Memorable Moments from the Royal Visit

The itinerary of the recent short visit of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother to New Zealand did not include Gisborne, but the occasion did recall in many minds the day four years earlier when Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh came to the city. On that January day in 1954 the weather was hot and windy. Great crowds began to assemble in the city early in the day, eager to get a glimpse of the Royal visitors.

The Queen made a quick visit to Kaiti Hill. Here she admires the view in company with the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker. Behind them are the Duke of Edinburgh, the town clerk, Mr W. M. Jenkins, and the Mayoress, Mrs Barker.
