Will the Line Ever be Completed?

×

Will the Moutohora line ever be completed to give Gisborne a rail link with the north? The answer to this question is as obscure as ever. The gap between Moutohora and Taneatua is only 34 miles as the aeroplane flies, but there are many who consider the steep gradients rule out Moutohora as a practical trunk route. Some think the line should go underground beyond Te Karaka and cross the divide by the Koranga valley. And there are many who consider it should be abandoned, altogether.
Apart from all other considerations, there is one potent argument which carries great general weight: When a line exists for 400 miles to the south, and another for 400 miles to the north, surely a case exists for bridging the short gap between them.
